TEAM HISTORY OF NFL FOOTBALL - Dallas Cowboys

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Welcome to 0595b.com/blog NFL JERSEYS BLOG.

The Dallas Cowboys joined the NFL in 1960 and by 1966 had established themselves as one of the league’s dynasty teams.  Beginning that season, with Hall of Famer Tom Landry leading the way, the Cowboys posted 20 consecutive winning seasons.  Along the way, Dallas earned wins in Super Bowls VI and XII.  Continued success followed and, in the 1990s, the Cowboys added three more Super Bowl championships (XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX) to team annals.

In 1960, the Dallas Cowboys became the NFL’s first successful new team since the collapse of the All-America Football Conference 10 years earlier. Clint Murchison Jr. was the new team’s majority owner and his first order of business was to hire Tex Schramm as general manager, Tom Landry as head coach and Gil Brandt as player personnel director.

This trio was destined for almost unprecedented success in the pro football world but the “glory years” didn’t come easily. Playing in the storied Cotton Bowl, the 1960 Dallas Cowboys had to settle for one tie in 12 games and Dallas didn’t break even until its sixth season in 1965. But in 1966, the Cowboys began an NFL-record streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons. That streak included 18 years in the playoffs, 13 divisional championships, five trips to the Super Bowl and victorDallas Cowboysies in Super Bowl VI and XII.

Dallas Cowboys won its first two divisional championships in 1966 and 1967 but lost to the Green Bay Packers in the NFL championship game each year. Similar playoff losses the next seasons were followed by a 16-13 last-second loss to Baltimore in Super Bowl V following the 1970 season. The Cowboys were typified as “a good team that couldn’t win the big games.”

But they dispelled such thought for good the very next year with a 24-3 win over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI. The Cowboys were Super Bowl-bound three more times from 1975 to 1978. They lost to Pittsburgh in extremely competitive games in Super Bowl X and XIII but defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10 in Super Bowl XII. During their big years of the 1970s, the Cowboys were led by such future Pro Football Hall of Fame members as quarterback Roger Staubach, tackle Rayfield Wright, defensive tackles Bob Lilly and Randy White, defensive back Mel Renfro and running back Tony Dorsett.

In 1967, Murchison announced that the Dallas Cowboys would build their own stadium in suburban Irving, Texas. A new Dallas pro football era began on October 24, 1971, when 65,024-seat Texas Stadium was opened.

The Cowboys of the 1970s and early 1980s were known as “America’s Team,” an outfit that was just a step ahead of almost every other club when it came to image-enhancing promotions such as The Dallas Cowboys Newsweekly with a circulation of 100,000, sales of Cowboys souvenirs and apparel and the famous Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

The Cowboys suffered their first losing season in two decades in 1986 and fell all the way to 3-13 in 1988. H. R. “Bum” Bright, who had purchased the Cowboys from Murchison in 1984, sold the team to Jerry Jones in 1989. Jones named former University of Miami coach Jimmy Johnson to replace Landry, who finished his career with 270 victories, third most by any coach in history.

Johnson’s first team won only once in 16 games but some daring trades and shrewd selections in the annual NFL draft - that included Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman - quickly returned the Cowboys to championship status in Super Bowl XXVII in the fourth season of the Jerry Jones regime. They followed with a second straight world title in Super Bowl XXVIII. In March 1994, college coach Barry Switzer replaced Johnson as the Cowboys third head coach. The winning continued under Switzer, as the “Team of the Nineties” won its third Super Bowl in four years with a 27-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. In 1998, Chan Gailey replaced Switzer as the Cowboys’ head coach followed two years later by Dave Campo. In 2007, Wade Phillips became only the seventh head coach in team history.

TEAM HISTORY OF NFL FOOTBALL - NEW YORK GIANTS

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Welcome to NFL JERSEYS BLOG -0595b.com/blog

The New York Giants enjoy one of the richest histories in pro football that dates to their birth in 1925.  The Giants became a significant part of the NFL as a team in New York, the nation’s largest city, helped the young league gain national media attention and a huge fan base.  Over the years, the Giants have won six NFL championships that include victories in Super Bowl XXI and XXV.

The history and tradition of the New York Giants is linked to pro football itself for one might have perished without the other in the early days of the National Football League. The late Tim Mara, now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, purchased a franchise for $500 in 1925 and before the Giants’ first season had ended, he had invested another $25,000 to keep the franchise alive. A team in New York was thus assured. To a young NFL that was seeking national media and fan attendance, a team in the nation’s largest city was an absolute must.

Lawrence TaylorThe value of New York exposure was clearly demonstrated in December of the first season when more than 70,000 turned out at the Polo Grounds to see the Giants play the Chicago Bears, who had just signed Red Grange, the most famous pro football player of the 1920s.

The very next season (1926), Grange and his agent formed a rival American Football League and placed their flagship team, the Yankees, in New York to battle the Giants head-to-head. It proved to be a costly battle but the Giants and the NFL won. The AFL lasted only one year.

In their third season in 1927, the Giants won their first NFL championship behind a defense led by tackle Steve Owen that permitted an all-time low of 20 points in 13 games. Owen became the Giants’ coach in 1930. He held the job for 23 seasons and wound up with a 153-108-17 record. He still ranks ninth in all-time coaching victories. The Giants enjoyed some of their finest seasons during the Owen years. Beginning with the start of divisional play in 1933, the Giants won eight Eastern division titles in 14 seasons and NFL championships in 1934 and 1938. Ken Strong, a triple-threat halfback and a premier placekicker, and Mel Hein, a center-linebacker who didn’t miss a game in 15 seasons, were Giants standouts through most of the 1930s and 1940s.

With the coaching of first Jim Lee Howell in the late 1950s and Allie Sherman in the early 1960s, the Giants won the NFL title in 1956 and six NFL Eastern championships in eight years from 1956 to 1963. Such stars as Y. A. Tittle, Frank Gifford, Roosevelt Brown, Emlen Tunnell and Andy Robustelli led New York’s annual chase to the title game. From 1964 to 1985, the Giants remained out of championship contention. With Bill Parcells at the helm, they won NFC Eastern division crowns in 1986, 1989 and 1990. They concluded the 1986 and 1990 campaigns with victories over Denver in Super BowlXXI and Buffalo in Super Bowl XXV.

From the start, the New York Giants have been a family enterprise. Founder Tim Mara’s sons, Jack and Wellington, succeeded him and Tim Mara II served for many years as the club’s vice president. Wellington Mara and Preston Robert Tisch, who purchased 50 percent of the club in 1991, served as co-chief executive officers until their deaths in 2005. In 2007, the Giants, led by quarterback Eli Manning and defensive end Michael Strahan, defeated the previously unbeaten New England Patriots to capture the Super Bowl XLII championship.

Weclome to NFL Jerseys Blog -www.0595b.com/blog

The New Orleans Saints have cut kicker John Carney, a 21-year NFL veteran who signed with the Saints in August for his second stint with team.

Tuesday’s move came after Carney, who played in 11 games, had been inactive for the last two while Garrett Hartley took over as placekicker.

The Saints also resigned fullback Kyle Ecke, added safety Herana-Daze Jones and cut cornerback Marcus McCauley, who’d been with the team since Dec. 8 and not played a game.

Those moves came after the Saints had announced earlier that they’ve signed tight end Tory Humphrey and placed fullback Marcus Mailei on injured reserve, ending his season.

Sanchez to start for Jets against Falcons

Mark Sanchez will start for the New York Jets against the Atlanta Falcons after missing one game with a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Coach Rex Ryan said the rookie quarterback was medically cleared by team doctors after practicing three straight days. Sanchez took all of the snaps with the first-team offense Friday after taking 75 percent of them Thursday.
“We went into practice thinking he would be fine, so he was going to get 100 percent of the reps,” Ryan said. “After talking with the doctors, they felt great. … Mark feels strong. I asked him again, ‘Do you feel strong?’ and he said, ‘Yeah, absolutely.”’
Mark Sanchez missed the Jets’ 26-3 victory last Sunday at Tampa Bay after injuring the knee against Buffalo on Dec. 3, and was replaced by Kellen Clemens. He returned to practice Wednesday and experienced no setbacks during the week.
“It feels good,” Sanchez said of the knee. “There is no swelling.”
Mark Sanchez will wear custom-fitted braces on both knees; he had already been wearing one on the left from a previous injury.
“It’s going to be a Joe Namath throwback game for Mark,” Ryan said. “He slid right in front of me in practice to make sure I knew he was ready to go. He feels confident. He threw the ball really well today. He’s ready to go.”
Ryan said the Jets also are preparing Sanchez for his first game in wintry weather. It’s expected to be snowy with near-freezing temperatures at the Meadowlands on Sunday.
“We put some of the UGG boot stuff in his helmet, so he’s going to be warmer,” Ryan said, referring to the wool-lined footwear. “I’m not kidding. Look at his helmet. He’s got some of that in there. We try to make sure our guys are comfortable and healthy and protected.”
The Jets said several players will be doing the same Sunday, such as linebackers Bryan Thomas and Kenwin Cummings, defensive tackle Sione Pouha, long snapper James Dearth, kicker Jay Feely, punter Steve Weatherford and the other quarterbacks. Other players can request the stuffing on game day, as well.
“The equipment staff is doing everything they can to make me comfortable,” Sanchez said. “It’s really working and I appreciate their help.”
Ryan isn’t concerned about how Sanchez, from Southern California, will fare in the cold and potentially messy conditions.
“He’s got big hands, which I think you have to have in cold-weather games,” Ryan said. “In really bad-weather games, if it’s raining, you need the big hands to zip the ball. He can throw it, so he’ll be just fine.”

Notes: C Nick Mangold missed his second straight day of practice with an illness and is listed as questionable, but Ryan said he’s going to play Sunday. … OL Robert Turner (left knee) is out, while CB Dwight Lowery(notes) (high right ankle sprain) is probable after missing the last three games.

NFL star of steelers, Harrison’s mom charged in Ohio brawl

Police in Ohio say the mother of Pittsburgh Steelers star James Harrison has been charged with assault following a brawl at a game-watching party in a community hall.

Akron police say 62-year-old Mildred Harrison was one of three people cited after the fight at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post Thursday.

Police say it’s not clear why the party turned violent about 10 p.m., during Cleveland’s 13-6 upset of division foe Pittsburgh.

Victims have told police they were pushed, punched and struck with beer bottles.

Harrison is due in Akron Municipal Court on Thursday. She declined to comment to the Akron Beacon-Journal when reached by telephone at her Akron home Friday.

James Harrison was the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.
