No. 14 USC beats Hawaii 49-36 in Kiffin’s debut |NFL jeresys

September 3rd, 2010

Southern California was all smiles, except for coach Lane Kiffin.

Matt Barkley and Ronald Johnson (who’s NFL jeresys sale in top 20) had record nights, connecting on three touchdowns to make Kiffin a winner in his Trojans’ coaching debut. No. 14 USC beat Hawaii 49-36 on Thursday night to start the post-Pete Carroll era.

Barkley had 257 yards passing and tied a school record with five TD passes while Johnson matched a USC mark with his three TD catches. Johnson also returned a punt 89 yards for another score in USC’s first game after being hit hard with sanctions by the NCAA that includes a postseason ban this season.

When asked how he was feeling after the inaugural win, Kiffin answered: “not very well.”

“We didn’t do it in the style that we wanted. We want to be tough, we want to be disciplined,” he said. “I thought we were tough today. I thought that we played physical in parts of the game, but we weren’t disciplined.”

Besides big performances by Barkley and Johnson, Marc Tyler finished with 154 yards on 17 carries.

While his players racked up career numbers, Kiffin pointed to a different stat: 11 penalties for 100 yards.

“I’m really disappointed with everything in general, but more important than anything was the (lack of) discipline,” said the 35-year-old coach.

The players, however, were thrilled with the victory after going through a tumultuous offseason.

“It’s huge for our whole team, for coach Kiffin, for the program, for all of the guys, it’s big time,” Barkley said. “It’s awesome, but it’s just a start.”

While USC’s offense looked as potent as ever, the defense allowed Hawaii to hang in the game and showed some holes. The Trojans couldn’t stop the Warriors, who gained 588 yards to USC’s 524.

“Defensively, we didn’t play very well obviously,” said Kiffin, who rejoined the program after a year with the University of Tennessee and 20 games with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders (the team that sale NFL jeresys in top 10). Before that, he served as a USC assistant for six seasons under Carroll, including the last two as offensive coordinator.

With USC’s depleted roster, Hawaii coach Greg McMackin said he could tell the Trojans were “gassed,” so the Warriors kept rotating in fresh players.

The problem was, USC’s offense never tired out.

“We ended up winning the game, which was good, but obviously as you can see, we’ve got some depth concerns and issues,” Kiffin said. “We’re got a lot of work to do, which was obvious.”

Kiffin raised some eyebrows early in the game when he decided to go for 2-point conversions after USC’s first three touchdowns. One was successful.

He said when the first one failed, it put his team in a position of going for it again.

“I thought that if we had some good plays lined up, we’d be able to make it and we kind of kept going with that for a while and after the score was up to a certain number we went back to extra points,” Kiffin said.

Barkley, who was spotty last year as a freshman starter, was sharp and efficient in the first game of his highly anticipated sophomore season. He completed his first seven passes and finished 18 of 23.

He became the fifth USC player to toss five TD passes in a game and the first since Mark Sanchez in 2008.

“It was a good start for Matt, five touchdowns passes and no interceptions,” Kiffin said. “Ronald had four overall touchdowns, which was good to see and Marc, in his first start, got probably nine or 10 yards a carry.

“So we had some good things. We’ve got a long way to go, but the good thing is we didn’t have any injuries and we’re 1-0.”

Raiders deny interest in Matt Leinart |NFL jeresys

September 2nd, 2010

The Oakland Raiders have plenty of roster moves they need to make before the start of the season.

Apparently trading for Matt Leinart (who’s NFL jeresys sale in top 20) isn’t one of them. The Raiders denied a report from ESPN on Wednesday that said the team has had discussions about trading with Arizona for Leinart.

“The Raiders have never discussed trading for Leinart,” the team said in a statement. “The Raiders are very happy about their quarterback situation.”

Oakland acquired Jason Campbell in an offseason trade with Washington (the team that sale NFL jeresys in top 10) and is pleased with what he’s brought as the starter. Campbell led Oakland to touchdowns on the opening drives of the last two exhibition games. He sustained a stinger and an injured right wrist last week against San Francisco but is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 12 in Tennessee.

Bruce Gradkowski and Kyle Boller are slated to be the backups as quarterback appears to be one position that is set heading into the final exhibition game against Seattle on Thursday night.

Oakland must reduce its roster from 75 to 53 by Saturday, giving some of the fringe players one last chance to make a good enough impression to make the team.

“I think you have to show up. They’re on the bubble for a reason because they have not shown up to this point,” coach Tom Cable said. “You have to make an exclamation point on Thursday night.”

The biggest questions left to be answered for the Raiders are the starters at center, fullback and cornerback; the backup running backs and receivers; the primary kick and punt returners; and which linebackers and defensive backs make the roster as backups and special teams players.

Cable said recently this will be the toughest cut-down decision in his four years with the organization because of the improved depth.

“There’s definitely going to be some eye-openers,” safety Michael Huff said. “But that’s what goes with being a good organization, being a team that has quality depth and great players. There’s always going to be competition and there’s going to be players that could start for other teams but because we have so much depth here, they won’t be able to play here.”

Among the players who have started in past years for Oakland but aren’t guaranteed roster spots this season are safety Hiram Eugene, and linebackers Thomas Howard, Ricky Brown and Sam Williams.

All three linebackers started games last year when Cable said that unit was one of the biggest weaknesses on the defense.

Williams has done well on special teams this summer and Brown provides versatility with the ability to play middle or outside linebacker. Howard was once viewed as a building block on the defense starting 62 of 64 games in his first four seasons.

He intercepted six passes in 2007, returning two for touchdowns, but is fighting for a backup spot this season with players like Williams, Brown and Quentin Groves.

“It’s just a blessing to be out here and playing this game we all love,” Howard said. “People forget that it’s an opportunity, and that’s how I am looking at it—as an opportunity to go out and play.”

Cable hasn’t named starters at center, where Samson Satele appears to have the edge over rookie Jared Veldheer, and cornerback, where Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt) are fighting for a starting job opposite Nnamdi Asomugha.

Marcel Reece has done his best to seize the fullback job that entered camp as an open competition. Luke Lawton will miss the first two games with a suspension and undrafted rookie Manase Tonga is the only other fullback on the roster.

Reece has four catches for 87 yards, bringing an added element with his ability to make plays in the passing game.

“He just continues to get better,” Cable said. “That’s the thing that he’s shown us is that, from one week to the next he’s going out and improving on whatever his negatives were from the week before. It’s starting to show up more and more that this guy, you can coach him, he’ll take it and he’ll go get it again. I certainly think that he’s really showing himself the right way.”

With Michael Bush’s status for the opener in doubt because of a broken left thumb, the Raiders might end up keeping both Michael Bennett and Rock Cartwright as backup running backs to Darren McFadden.

The Raiders will also have some difficult decisions to make at receiver and defensive back. Louis Murphy, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Chaz Schilens appear set as the top three receivers, with players like Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jacoby Ford, Yamon Figurs, Nick Miller and Todd Watkins fighting for the other spots.

With all those players other than Watkins competing for the return jobs as well, special teams could play a big role in who makes the team.

At defensive back, three drafted rookies are in the running for roster spots in fifth-round cornerback Walter McFadden, seventh-round cornerback Jeremy Ware and seventh-round safety Stevie Brown.

NY turns down Burress’ request for work release |NFL jeresys

September 1st, 2010

Former New York Giants Super Bowl star Plaxico(who’s NFL jeresys sale in top 20) Burress has come up short in his bid for work release during his two-year prison sentence in a gun case, a denial that could keep him behind bars until at least next spring, prison officials said Tuesday.

The state Department of Correctional Services said the nature of his November 2008 crime merited turning down his request for a work furlough, which would have let him spend some portion of his time free and working. Burress can appeal the decision but otherwise can’t reapply for a work furlough until June 6, 2011, the date he comes up for potential full release if he gets time off for good behavior.

“The serious and negative impact illegal guns have on the community coupled with (the) dangerous nature of the weapon discharging in a public place renders him unsuitable for work release,” the agency said.

Burress’ lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, didn’t immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Tuesday.

For now, the wide receiver remains in protective custody, because of his notoriety, at a prison in the central New York community of Oneida.

The work release request was Burress’ second since he started serving his sentence last September. Such requests are rarely successful—less than 2 percent of the nearly 27,000 applications received last year were granted, New York prison system spokeswoman Linda Foglia said.

Burress, 33, pleaded guilty last year to attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

The case began when Burress went to the Latin Quarter nightclub with a .40-caliber gun tucked into the waistband of his track pants. He later said he was concerned for his safety because a teammate had been held up at gunpoint days before.

The weapon slipped down Burress’ leg and fired, injuring his right thigh. Prosecutors said the bullet narrowly missed a security guard.

The gun wasn’t licensed in New York or New Jersey, where Burress was living, and his Florida concealed-weapons permit had expired. He also failed to report the incident to authorities.

The prison system hasn’t released any letters written to officials about Burress’ latest work release attempt, but the Manhattan district attorney’s office said it had opposed his request.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has ruled that Burress would be reinstated and eligible to sign with a team upon completing his sentence. But the NFL is facing uncertainty about its 2011 season, with the possibility of a lockout looming if players and owners can’t agree on a new contract. The current contract expires after this season.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese has said the team will keep its options open with Burress, who caught the winning touchdown for the Giants over the New England Patriots in the final minute of the 2008 Super Bowl. And some of his former teammates seem ready to welcome him back: Halfback Brandon Jacobs went to training camp one day this summer sporting a custom-made T-shirt saying “Free 17 Let Him Ball Out,” a reference to Burress’ No. 17 jersey.

Burress has had a satisfactory record in prison, with one “misbehavior report” that cost him a week of phone privileges and 30 days of recreation privileges, Foglia said. A corrections officer said Burress had lied last November about having permission to use the phone to call his lawyer at a time when calls aren’t permitted, the report shows.

Burress also has completed an anger management program behind bars, Foglia said.

AP Sports Writer Tom Canavan in East Rutherford, N.J., contributed to this report.

NFL star’s hair insured for $1 million |NFL jeresys

August 31st, 2010

The long, flowing black hair that tumbles out of NFL star Troy Polamalu’s  (the team that sale NFL jeresys in top 10) helmet and down his back has been insured for $1 million by Head and Shoulders, the shampoo brand that is endorsed by the Pittsburgh Steelers player.

The insurance was obtained through Lloyd’s of London, which did not reveal what must be done to Polamalu’s hair for anyone to collect on the policy.

At nearly three-feet long, Polamalu’s hair has been targeted by an opposing NFL player at least once—the Chiefs’ Larry Johnson tackled Polamalu by the hair during a 49-yard interception return in a 2006 game.

Polamalu, a five-time Pro Bowl player, wears his hair long as a tribute to his Samoan heritage.

AP source: Brackett’s X-rays come back negative |NFL jeresys

August 28th, 2010

A person with knowledge of the results has told The Associated Press that Colts linebacker Gary Brackett(who’s NFL jeresys sale in top 20) is not expected to miss significant time after X-rays on his injured right hand were negative.

The person spoke Friday on the condition of anonymity because the team has not disclosed a diagnosis.

Brackett was injured during Thursday night’s loss at Green Bay when he appeared to hit his hand on the helmet of teammate Philip Wheeler. He is the Colts’ defensive captain and signed a five-year, $33 million contract in March.

Brackett is not likely to play next Thursday against the Bengals because the Colts traditionally bench most of their starters in the preseason finale.

Harvin returns to practice |NFL jeresys

August 26th, 2010

Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin (who’s NFL jeresys sale in top 20)returned to practice for the first time since collapsing on the field last week because of a migraine headache.

Harvin was taken by ambulance to the hospital on Thursday after collapsing and vomiting on the field. He spent the night in the hospital and did not go with the team to San Francisco for Sunday’s preseason game.

Coach Brad Childress said Tuesday that Harvin was having more tests done and would not resume practicing until those were finished. He was practicing in full gear Wednesday during the portion that was open to the media.

It is unclear if Harvin will play in the preseason game on Saturday night against Seat

Giants QB Eli Manning plans to play against Ravens | NFL jeresys

August 24th, 2010

Eli Manning (who’s NFL jeresys sale in top 20)got under the center and everything looked normal, for the most part.

He identified the middle linebacker, barked out a few signals and took the snap from Shaun O’Hara. The only thing out of the ordinary was this: Manning was wearing a blue Giants baseball cap to cover his head and the meding 3-inch wound on the left side of his forehead.

Different? Absolutely. But the Giants had their quarterback back at practice and getting ready to start Saturday’s next-to-last preseason game against the Ravens in Baltimore
“I liked his tempo right away,” coach Tom Coughlin said after practice. “He got the ball out of his hand quick and made some real good decisions. So we’re glad to have him back on the practice field.”

Manning, who intends to wear his helmet at practice Wednesday, left no doubt before practice that he will play against the Ravens.

“If everything goes according to plan, yes,” Coughlin said.

Manning was held out of the Giants’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday. The team was concerned the gash would reopen if he were hit or would become irritated or infected by wearing a helmet.

The 12 stitches that closed the wound were removed Friday, four days after he was bloodied in the game against the Jets. Manning’s helmet was knocked off and he was hit by safety Jim Leonhard.

“It’s no fun sitting out, sitting out practice last week,” Manning said. “At least it was a short week and I didn’t miss too much. I like being out there for the games. It is preseason and I was trying to be smart and make sure I get everything healed now where you have a little time.”

Manning, who led the Giants to a Super Bowl in February 2008, has started a franchise-record 87 consecutive regular-season games.

“I’m feeling great,” Manning said before practice. “Ready, excited about getting out to practice today and getting back into the action.”

Manning said the gash is healing and the scar is not too bad. The team plans to add extra padding to his helmet and has talked to the helmet manufacturer, Schutt Sports, about adjustments.

The third preseason game is usually the most important for NFL teams. It’s the one that the starters play at least a half.

The Giants’ offense needs the work. The unit has been limited in the preseason with starting guards Chris Snee (knee) and Rich Seubert) (hand) out The team also was forced to use third-string quarterback Rhett Bomar the whole game against the Steelers because of injuries to Manning and backup Jim Sorgi (shoulder), which meant the game plan had to be reduced.

Snee and Seubert are due back this week and the Giants have most of their tight ends back, too. They have played short-handed most of training camp with Kevin Boss (hamstring), Travis Beckum (hamstring) and Scott Chandler(hip) bothered by injuries.

“It’s just something that happens at training camp,” Manning said. “You get a few guys banged up, and if it’s time to get everybody back, this is kind of the time you want everybody back when you’re getting close to the start of the season.

“We’ve got a long week, a full week between games. So I’m looking forward to a great week of practice and getting everybody kind of back healthy, back into sync of what we’re doing.”

Bucs expect to have injured QB Freeman for opener | NFL Jeresys

August 23rd, 2010

By the time Tampa Bay closed out an exhibition victory over Kansas City, Buccaneers quarterback Josh  Freeman (who’s NFL jeresys in top 20) had regained his composure and was talking positively about the thumb injury that will sideline him until at least the opening week of the regular season.

The second-year pro feels fortunate to have only broken the tip of the thumb on his throwing hand and doesn’t think it will hinder him from being ready to play when the Bucs face the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 12.

“I was just hoping it was jammed, but it was a little different pain than just being jammed,” said Freeman, who was hurt when his right hand struck the helmet of a pass rusher during the first quarter of Saturday night’s 20-15 win over the Chiefs.

“When I saw the X-ray and heard the word fracture, I was kind of freaking out. They told me: `Hey, just take care of it, and it should just be a couple of weeks. When I heard that, it made me feel a lot better.’

Freeman was the third quarterback selected in the 2009 draft behind Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez. He went 3-6 in nine starts as a rookie, and Tampa Bay — coming off its worst finish since 1991—doesn’t have an experienced veteran playing behind the 6-foot-6, 248-pound passer.

Third-year pro Josh Johnson  appeared in six games and lost all four of his starts last season. Second-year backup Rudy  Carpenter, who has yet to play in an NFL regular season game, spent 11 weeks on the Dallas Cowboys’ (the team that sale NFL jeresys in top 10)practice squad before the Bucs signed him to the active roster last November.

Although coach Raheem Morris said he was encouraged by the way each played in throwing a touchdown pass after Freeman departed Saturday night, the reality is if Freeman doesn’t recover as quickly as expected, the Bucs could be in the market for experienced help.

“We’re very fortunate. It could have been worse,” Morris said, adding that he and general manager Mark Dominik likely would have some discussions while also trying to get a better feel for exactly when Freeman might be able to practice again.

Initial expectations are for the week of the season opener against the Browns.

Even though he’s played just three series and thrown eight passes this preseason, Freeman is confident he won’t be rusty when he returns.

“I’ll be back, ready to go. It’s not like I’m just going to be sitting doing nothing. I’ll still be working footwork drills, still running, still getting the mental part of the game,” the 22-year-old said. “And I’ve still got a young arm, so I should be able to come out and wing it.”

Freeman was injured on Tampa Bay’s first offensive possession. He returned to the sideline with his right thumb immobilized with a splint, and the rest of his hand was bandaged, too.

As difficult as it might have been, the former Kansas State star didn’t let on to teammates that there might be reason for concern.

“I could see guys looking at me and seeing how I was reacting on the sideline. Obviously, you can’t act like everything is lost, because it’s not,” Freeman said. “It’s a minor setback. I’m looking forward to attacking this thing, and getting it right, and getting ready for Week 1.”

Haynesworth: Redskins underplayed his condition|NFL jeresys

August 22nd, 2010

Albert Haynesworth(who’s NFL jeresys sale in top 20) took his most defiant stand yet against Mike Shanahan on Saturday night, saying the Washington Redskins (the team that NFL jeresys sale in top 10)coach underplayed the two-time All-Pro’s medical condition in recent days and that he intends to boycott next year’s offseason conditioning program as well.

Speaking after the Redskins’ 23-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Haynesworth also said that he shouldn’t have been playing in the third quarter, when only backups were in the game.

Haynesworth stopped practicing early Tuesday at training camp and did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. Shanahan gave varying explanations for Haynesworth’s idleness each day. The coach initially said Haynesworth “just was sick,” then said the cause was dehydration, then finally said it was “more of a headache than anything else.
Haynesworth said he had something more, but he didn’t specify what.

“You’ll have to ask them, but I guess they’ll tell you ‘headaches’ again,” said Haynesworth, emphasizing the word by holding his fingers in the air to simulate quotation marks. “It was part of it, but it wasn’t all of it. They left out a whole lot of stuff.”

Why would the Redskins do that?

“I don’t know. I guess make yourself look good, I don’t know. Make me look bad for not going to their offseason conditioning program,” Haynesworth said. “But, I mean, next year I’m not coming either. I’ll be on my trainer again, and I’ll get back in the same shape I’m in, and feel good about myself.”

It was Haynesworth’s boycott of the Redskins’ offseason program that drew Shanahan’s ire all spring. Haynesworth stayed away in part because he wanted to work with his own trainer, but also because he wanted a trade so he wouldn’t have to play nose tackle in a 3-4 defense.

Because he didn’t take part in the offseason work, Haynesworth was required by Shanahan to pass a conditioning test in order to practice at training camp. Haynesworth failed on his first attempts and didn’t pass the test until the 10th day of camp.

Once he started practicing, Haynesworth was made to work with the second-stringers. He played with the backups in the first preseason game a week ago and again Saturday night, entering in the second half after all the starters had departed.

“Third quarter. I’m a ninth-year pro,” Haynesworth said. “I don’t think I should have been out there in the third quarter. But, for having ‘headaches’ again, that was what they wanted to do.”

The Redskins said Shanahan will respond to Haynesworth’s statements on Monday, when the team resumes practice. Addressing reporters before Haynesworth spoke, Shanahan reiterated his stance on Haynesworth’s place on the team.

“He wasn’t going to play with the first or second team for obvious reasons,” Shanahan said. “He’s going to have to earn his way to play with that group.”
